Awell Health Apps

Company objectives

Healthcare systems are shifting from a fee-for-service, activity-focused model towards a model based on outcomes and the cost to deliver those outcomes. Our main focus was to create a system of work that enable care teams and patients by setting up two clear goals:

  • Design a SaaS system that empowers care teams and patients to effectively coordinate care delivery throughout the entire continuum of care.

  • Validate whether creating a self-serve system of work will result in better outcomes for patients at a lower cost to society and if it will accelerate the adoption of Awell Studio while driving the overall expansion of the platform.

Product Design impact and outcomes

Except for a brief prior collaboration with a design agency, I was the company’s first and only internal designer. I designed this product from scratch, building it on the foundation of a scalable SaaS product. Additionally, I contributed in the following ways:

  • Led initial explorations and defined solutions in an uncharted SaaS space.
  • Received both qualitative and quantitative feedback from users, who reported improvements in the product after each iterative cycle, confirming that company objectives are on track.
  • Established a workflow process that kept everyone in the company aligned and on the same page.
  • Developed a hand-over process that provided clarity to the development team on new feature releases.
  • Created a versatile design system to scale the product in a consistent manner.
  • Assisted the marketing department in creating their initial visual identity and voice.
  • Designed and built the company website, implementing tools to stay connected with visitors, measure their interest, and detect and address their concerns.

Product walkthrough

As the sole contributor, I was responsible for the entire design process of the product. Below, I’ve selected a few examples that showcase the outcomes and quality of my work.

While we aim to make the interface intuitive, we also considered adding a welcome splash screen to give users a complete overview of the app.

This page was designed to define the high-level building blocks of the Care Path project. We created a flexible workspace where users can create, drag and drop elements, and set logical rules—all while maintaining a clear overview.

This is a collaborative visual builder, much like Miro, but enhanced with a comprehensive suite of tools for designing logical flows that caregivers use to replicate patient treatment care pathways. Understanding the landscape of medical care and the complexity of treatment flows was crucial to building this section of the product.

Collaboration was at the heart of the entire product, enabling seamless interaction among medical professionals with diverse expertise. Often, external users were invited to participate temporarily, so the tools needed to be clear and intuitive for them to jump in and use them effectively.

Developing care paths is only half the story. The other half involves simulating real-world scenarios with active patients to test, refine, and enable continuous iteration.

Developing an online form builder was essential for collecting data while maintaining communication with patients. The forms created are standardized clinical forms designed for value-based healthcare.

Our research revealed that our user personas require multiple views of care paths to support their various Jobs to Be Done (JBTD). One such view replicates a Gantt chart, displaying the timeline, status, and assigned responsibilities for each task in the project.

Building a complex product demands multiple layers of testing to ensure a fully validated experience. That’s why, in my design process, I always create a click-dummy prototype—in this case, a simple project publishing and versioning flow.

Using the developed care flows, the patients are enrolled through a separate mobile experience. This was designed with simplicity, intuitiveness, and emotional empathy in mind—key elements that support product adoption and retention but also send a strong message where our focus as a company is- patients’ wellbeing.
